CIEGO DE AVILA

Ciego de Avila Province in central Cuba is best known for the Atlantic resort islands of Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo. Hotel companies like Tryp and Melia operate large resorts on these northern shores, and a massive causeway cuts south across the bay to link up with the rest of Cuba. Resort guests often drive rental cars across the causeway to the dreary city of Moron.

Further south, the terrain on the road from Moron to Ciego de Avila is flat and well cultivated with sugarcane. Our Ciego de Avila travel photos introduce the little known provincial capital, where life is unaffected by tourism. The city's crumbling colonial center is unremarkable, and visitors should expect nothing more than the chance to see a slice of real Cuban life.
